What can be specified now, and what needs a trial.

Two different kinds of blocker, deliberately kept apart. Specification work is reachable today from public standards, calculation and analysis. A trial is not. Presenting them as the same thing reads as if nothing can proceed.

Hydration support

Maintaining fluid and electrolyte status through heat load, transport and recovery windows.

Evidence today
Oral electrolyte solution is well supported as a first-line rehydration route where gut function is intact. In healthy production animals, physiological markers move without corresponding production outcomes.
Requires a trial
Use-case-specific endpoints. Recovery language sits close to the disease-claim boundary and needs care.

Nutritional recovery

Defined stress points — post-scours calves, post-transport cattle, postpartum cows, heat-stressed animals.

Evidence today
The best-supported case is oral electrolyte therapy in diarrhoeic calves, which is explicitly therapeutic and applies to a diagnosed condition. Body condition score is the appropriate production-side recovery metric. Evidence that any supplement accelerates recovery in healthy production animals is largely absent.
Requires a trial
Defined-use-case trials with objective endpoints. This is the category where the line between nutrition and therapy is thinnest.

Digestive nutrition

Supporting digestive function through nutrient supply and fermentable substrate rather than intervention.

Evidence today
Fibre source and protein quality are the measurable levers. Live yeast carries pooled quantitative support in ruminants; direct-fed microbial effects are strain-, stage- and farm-specific.

Strain- and dose-specific data in the target diet type — category-level evidence does not transfer.

Skin & coat

Substrate supply for keratinisation, hair growth and epidermal integrity.

Evidence today
Linoleic acid, zinc and protein adequacy are settled at standards level, and deficiency in any of the three shows in the coat. EPA and DHA carry review-level support in haircoat disorder. Oil supplementation improved graded coat quality from baseline without changing transepidermal water loss — which argues against a barrier claim.

Analytical ingredient verification and a controlled coat-scoring study on the finished product.

Early-life nutrition

Nutrient supply through the neonatal window, when the animal is functionally monogastric.

Evidence today
Requirements for preweaning cattle are specified at standards level. Trace mineral status is modifiable, but free-choice intake varies enormously between individuals, so a stated inclusion rate is an assumption about delivered dose rather than a measurement of it.
Specifiable now
Guaranteed analysis and amino acid supply verified against published preweaning requirements, and measured intake under the intended delivery format.
Requires a trial
A controlled growth study on the finished replacer against a defined comparator. Evidence generated by one delivery route does not substantiate another.

Multi-species formats

Delivery formats that work across species and production settings without reformulation.

Evidence today
A format and specification question. Nutrient requirements differ materially by species, so a shared format does not imply a shared inclusion rate.
Specifiable now
Species-specific inclusion rates and per-species feeding directions, both set by public regulation. Selenium carries hard federal ceilings that differ more than fourfold between cattle and sheep, and copper has narrow margins in sheep — so the numbers exist and the exclusions are knowable before any animal is fed.
Requires a trial
Efficacy in any species the product is offered to. Evidence attaches to a species, a strain and a dose, and a shared pail does not loosen that.

    A systematic review of 17 canine trials found a very limited and possibly clinically unimportant effect with moderate-to-high risk of bias, and consensus panels give probiotics only a weak recommendation. Effects are strain- and dose-specific and cannot be extrapolated between strains, so a named deposited strain with its own data is the minimum bar.

  • Clinoptilolite for canine digestive support

    Insufficient

    Genuinely promising in neonatal calves, but the canine evidence is close to absent — one unblinded ten-dog study in a non-indexed journal. The one controlled canine microbiota trial used a different zeolite with clinoptilolite absent, and the most rigorous trial against a diarrhoea endpoint in any species missed its primary endpoint.

Ingredient verification testing matters here regardless: a median 45% of commercial foods tested contained unlisted ingredients.

    Its ammonium selectivity is the mechanistically best-established property in the whole ingredient, and it translates: 2.5% of diet dry matter at fine grind significantly reduced ruminal ammonia and urinary urea nitrogen. Grind is decisive — 400 µm material produced no ruminal effect, though it outperformed fine material for manure emissions, so the intended target has to be fixed before the specification is written.

Association of American Feed Control Officials

Scope. Required label elements, the standardized nutritional adequacy statement formats, and what constitutes misbranding.

Supports. Gives the exact prescribed wording for each substantiation route and confirms that an incorrect adequacy statement, or a disease claim without an approved drug, is misbranding.

Does not establish. Does not carry force of law on its own — AAFCO models bind only where a state has adopted them, and AAFCO approves, certifies and endorses nothing.

Supports. Substantiates a properly formulated oral electrolyte as first-line rehydration for calves that retain a functional gut.

Does not establish. Does not reflect naturally occurring disease — diarrhoea was experimentally induced, acidemia was relatively mild, and treatment arms were not composition-matched.
