Two different kinds of blocker, deliberately kept apart. Specification work is reachable today from public standards, calculation and analysis. A trial is not. Presenting them as the same thing reads as if nothing can proceed.

Complete diets

Meeting total nutrient requirements as the sole ration, across life stage and activity level.

Evidence today
Requirements are settled at standards level for every essential nutrient. Adequacy is a formulation and verification exercise rather than an open research question.
Specifiable now
The whole adequacy package. AAFCO recognises two substantiation routes and a feeding trial is the alternative, not a prerequisite — formulation to the recognised nutrient profile, verified by analysis, earns the same statement. That brings with it the guaranteed analysis, the calorie content statement by the prescribed calculation, and feeding directions derived from energy density.
Requires a trial
Digestibility, and any outcome claim on the finished formula. A calculated energy value must be declared as calculated; a determined value requires a metabolism study.

Performance nutrition

Sustaining work capacity, thermal tolerance and recovery between sessions in dogs doing repeated physical work.

Evidence today
Energy demand dominates and is context-dependent — measured requirements in endurance work vary widely by load, terrain and temperature. Higher fat suits endurance; balanced macronutrients suit sprint work. Controlled data for agility, field-trial and detection work is sparse, so those recommendations are extrapolated.
Specifiable now
Energy density, by calculation from proximate analysis, and the macronutrient architecture the work type calls for. The market resolves performance into three defined rungs, so a target ratio can be set deliberately rather than by feel.
Requires a trial
Work capacity, endurance and recovery outcomes, and feeding rates for working dogs — measured expenditure runs 1.9 to 2.5 times the maintenance coefficient and swings with load, terrain and temperature. No equation predicts it from proximates.

Digestive support

Nutrient and protein digestibility, faecal consistency and volume, and hindgut fermentation.

Evidence today
The strongest evidence sits with fibre and diet rather than microbial ingredients. Fibre source measurably changes digestibility and faecal output. Probiotic effects in dogs are limited and strain-specific; postbiotic evidence in dogs is essentially absent.
Specifiable now
Fibre selection and inclusion, and a stability programme establishing viable count at end of shelf life under the actual packaging and storage conditions. Published surveys found only a minority of commercial probiotics met their own viable claim, so this is a real point of difference rather than a formality.

Stool quality, faecal consistency and any digestive-health outcome on the finished formulation.

Maintaining comfortable, sustained movement in dogs at risk of degenerative joint change.

Evidence today
Energy control is the best-evidenced lever by a wide margin — lifetime restriction delayed first radiographic change by years. Among ingredients, long-chain omega-3 fatty acids rank highest; glucosamine and chondroitin performed comparably to placebo in blinded force-plate work.

In obese dogs, lameness change became detectable from roughly 6% bodyweight loss subjectively and 9% on gait analysis. This is a formulation and feeding-guidance decision, not an additive.

    Genuinely promising in neonatal calves, but the canine evidence is close to absent — one unblinded ten-dog study in a non-indexed journal. The one controlled canine microbiota trial used a different zeolite with clinoptilolite absent, and the most rigorous trial against a diarrhoea endpoint in any species missed its primary endpoint.

Reading labels — nutritional adequacy statement formats

Association of American Feed Control Officials

Scope. Required label elements, the standardized nutritional adequacy statement formats, and what constitutes misbranding.

Supports. Gives the exact prescribed wording for each substantiation route and confirms that an incorrect adequacy statement, or a disease claim without an approved drug, is misbranding.

Does not establish. Does not carry force of law on its own — AAFCO models bind only where a state has adopted them, and AAFCO approves, certifies and endorses nothing.

Effectiveness of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, marine-based fatty acid compounds, and carprofen in dogs with hip osteoarthritis

Scope. Six-week block-randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial in 75 owned dogs measured against force-plate peak vertical force.

Supports. Objective gait evidence that marine lipid extracts can shift weight-bearing, and that glucosamine/chondroitin at 30 mg/kg/day performed similarly to placebo.

Does not establish. Does not extend beyond six weeks, found no significant between-group difference on subjective scoring, and was supported by a supplement manufacturer.

Systematic review and meta-analysis of enriched therapeutic diets and nutraceuticals in canine and feline osteoarthritis
